1. Integrated Farming System-A Concept
Note
Integrated
farming is an improved version of that mixed cropping, where not only
crops, but all types of plants and animals (including aquatic plant and
animal), insects are utilized for production. These are combined in such a
way and proportion that each element helps the other; the waste of one is
recycled as food of the other, so that our overall quality of production is
increased, incidence of risk is reduced and the system becomes energy
efficient as a whole.
2. Soil - A Manual
It
is an unconsolidated mineral matter that has been subjected to and
influenced by genetic and environmental factors --- parent material,
climate, organisms and topography, all acting over a period of time. Due to
difference of genetic and environmental factors, soils differ among
themselves in some or all the properties. Thus soils differ in texture;
some are coarse, some are fine textured. They also differ in colour; some
are red, some are black, some may be deep while others are shallow.
3. Multipurpose Trees in Integrated
Farming - A Hand Book
Multipurpose
trees are those species of trees which can potentially make more than one
functional contribution to the whole farm. Proper integration and use of
right species of trees would significantly improve the whole farm
performance in terms of ecological and sustainability.
4. Rice-fish farming
The rice-fish farming system is one of the approaches to Low-external
Input Rice Production. This is a low cost method of producing rice and at
the same time the stocked fish provides an environmentally friendly way of
controlling pests and grass and it provides nutrients for farm needs.
5. Nurturing common lands
If we want to develop a
self-sustainable integrated farm clusters we have to think of generating
resources out of these community owned common property. Ideally such a
cluster boundary should be a whole village ecosystem. This will perhaps
open up scopes to increase the opportunity of work along with availability
of food, fodder and fuel in the village and save and conserve environment
and natural resources from being destroyed.
